Gyozas. mmmm

Today, I wanted to surprise Shon with a yummy meal. His grandmother is from Japan, and this is one of his favorite meals that she makes. She taught me how to make them after we got married, so every once in a while, I like to surprise Shon with some gyozas. Here's how they're made.

First off, the ingredients. This recipe feeds about 3 people
-about a pound of ground beef.
-Wonton wraps (found in your refrigerated veggie section)
-1/2 a head of cabbage
-a sprinkle of garlic powder

The first step is to shred the half head of cabbage. I use a mandolin (picture below) but I suppose you could just use a knife and cut the pieces up VERY small.

Here I am shredding the cabbage.

And this is what it looks like after it's been shredded.

This is where the fun begins, you use your hands and mix together the ground beef, the shredded cabbage, and two quick sprinkles of garlic powder. Below is what it should look like when you're done.

This is the wonton skin.

Take one, fill it with a bit of the mixture.

Moisten your finger with water.

And wet two touching edges of the wonton skin. Looking at the one below, that'd be the bottom and left sides of the skin.

Then you fold it over in half to form a triangle.

And pinch it down so it stays together.

Then you fold up each of the 3 edges

And place it on a baking sheet along with all the rest of them.

When you're ready to cook them, add vegetable oil to the pan and heat it up. The vegetable oil shouldn't cover the gyoza entirely, just enough to come halfway up the gyoza when it's in the pan.

Mmmmm fried gyozas.

You just brown them on both sides until the skin is crispy.

And for the sauce, you mix soy sauce and vinegar. You can use white vinegar, but I like the flavor of rice vinegar. The proportions are as follows: 3/4 soy sauce, 1/4 vinegar.

ENJOY!!!!
